Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book

.

It's been so long since I last did one of these posts; the last Top Ten Tuesday that I wrote on this blog was in October 2018. Since the beginning of 2019, I don't really have much spare time because I went out a lot. So keeping up with my book reviews was the only thing that I focused on for this blog ðŸ˜…. In this post, I'm going to discuss Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book, which is a topic for April 2nd, but I still want to do it anyway. I think I might have done a similar post in the past, but let's consider this an updated version of that. So here's the list in no particular order! ✨

1. Book Cover
If you've followed my blog for a while, then you'll know for sure that I'm weak against beautiful book covers. A well designed book cover alone is enough to attract and intrigue me to pick that book and read it. I've been disappointed several times because of that; but it doesn't stop me from loving a beautiful book cover.
2. My Favorite Author
I have a list of favorite authors that I consider as auto-buy because I want to read everything written by them. This means I've enjoyed their book(s) in the past and am eager to enjoy their writing again.
3. Positive Reviews (4+)
These days, before picking up a book, I always have this habit of checking its' rating on Goodreads. Most of the time, I'm convinced that it'll be a good read if the average rating is above 4—especially if a lot of people have reviewed it. I really don't want to waste my time on books that might not be good.
4. Relevance
This one is pretty relative depending on what season of life am I in or what kind of things am I going through. Recently, I've been really enjoying books on the topic of suffering / adversity because my family is going through a rough patch. These books has certainly helped me a lot in getting through this phase and I'm really grateful for that. I think I'm going to pick up books on marriage or parenting later on in life when I've finally reached that season in my life.
5. Hype
Most of the time, I don't really join in the hype; but sometimes I do. I picked up books like The Hate U Give and The Martian solely because of the hype surrounding it. For those cases, I definitely did not regret it.
6. Friend's Recommendation
A few of my good friends are also avid readers; and since they knew me pretty well, I'm quite assured that they will recommend me a book that I'd love to read. One of the recent recommendations that I received was The Road Back to You, a book about Enneagram, and I absolutely loved it.
7. Genre
There are certain genres that I'm more attracted to than others. For the most part, I'm drawn towards contemporary fiction, fantasy, Christianity, and self-help books. Generally I'm open to reading any kind of genres. But I'm avoiding horror novels that might haunt me at night 😂.
8. Adapted Into a Movie
I'm also really drawn to books that are about to be made into a movie! I believe if it's going to have its own movie, the story better be good. And I usually prefer to read the book first before watching the movie—but I don't always do that.
9. Number of Pages
I don't know why but I'm always intimidated by super thick books 😂. Which is why it's more likely for me to pick up books that range from 200-400 pages long. 500-1000 pages books are a pretty huge commitment, and they usually take me a really long time to finish.
10. Blurb
Lastly, I'm usually not a blurb-reader because most of the time I love jumping into the book without knowing what it's going to be about. But in some cases, I do read the blurb and if it intrigues me enough, I'll probably pick that book up.

So that's it for today's post! It's a fun change because I've only written book reviews on this blog recently. Hopefully I'll come across more fun topics to write about in the future! Feel free to share your own Top Ten Tuesday posts in the comments below! 😊
