I'm a huge Riordan junkie, and The Son of Neptune is one of my favorites (aside from Hera being so messed up and all). I agree that Percy Jackson has a comic sense of humor (ha the feast for tuna line still cracks me up), and remains loyal to his friends. The only thing I slightly dislike was Hera's actions, but she is rather proud, so I loved the book regardless. I finished the series a while ago, and you're definitely in for a treat in the last three books!
